ares thouros. the violent. the furious.
STRENGTHS: Work ethic. When something is important to Sin, nothing can cause him to stray from it. He will work long hours in service to his causes. When a friend needs him, he will be there at once with no questions asked. He does not give up easily, if at all. Courage under fire. Sin is a strange bird, in that he is easily angered but equally good at rolling with hard punches. When shit hits the fan he is able to adapt quickly and with relative ease. Once the dire situation has passed, that's when the trembling, violent anger hits.
WEAKNESSES: Short fuse. Sin goes from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye. His anger is easily roused and difficult to soothe. He enjoys both physical and verbal altercations, and will be more likely to rise to or even provoke them the longer he is held captive. He responds even more aggressively to threats against friends or loved ones than he is to threats to himself. Zealot. He is passionate about his causes to an uncomfortable and alienating degree. Sin is not easily swayed. Moderation is anathema to him. If he has nothing to act upon, nothing to throw himself body and soul into, he feels utterly useless and empty. Possessive. When Sin finds a cause -- be it a person or a purpose -- he quickly develops an intense feeling of possessiveness and protectiveness over it. This can be utterly suffocating to some and adorably appealing to others. His passionate attachment in these situations has served, unfortunately, to bully people away from his favorite causes and individuals. Grudge-bearing. Sin forgets no slight, however small. He mulls over wrongs done to him. He never lets them go. Even if there is no immediate call for vengeance, he catalogues those things done to him, and will act when the opportunity presents itself. He truly believes he forgives but he does not forget. His parents (and many others) would say otherwise.
Daniel is a man of brightly-burning passions. What he cares about, he cares for with unmatched ferocity. What he does not is discarded without a second thought. To those who do not know him, this trait can read as disloyalty, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Once Daniel has committed himself to a person or a cause, he is rarely turned from his course. This can prove difficult for the objects of his attention, as he is volatile, persistent, and relatively unprincipled in his pursuit of his goals; no small number of his friends have cut him off entirely rather than deal head-on with problems he's caused or exacerbated. Those who can tolerate his intensity are rewarded with a friend of unmatched loyalty, whose true depths are only revealed in time.
Daniel does not deal well with equivocation. He is capable of being quite charming and charismatic, traits he has often put to use to escape undesirable consequences. More frequently he is blunt, sometimes to the point of cruelty, and offers his opinions without provocation. His zeal can be offputting to those who do not share it, particularly when he tends (as he often does) toward violence. He is quick to brand more deliberate persons as cowards. He cares nothing for the comfort of would-be allies, and has alienated more than one with his inflexible nature. He considers this no great loss.
HEIGHT: 6'2" WEIGHT: 180 lbs HAIR: black EYES: black
Daniel is a vain and proud man, and for good reason. He is 6'2" of lean, well-trained muscle, honed to excellence through weight training, swimming, and cross-country running since his early teens. His black hair is relatively long, always swept back away from his face in a rakishly messy look. He has a close-cropped beard kept in meticulous order at all times. He has perfected a highly effective smoldering look (which his friends teasingly refer to as Blue Steel), but more often than not, he breaks the spell himself with an unabashed and boyish laugh. His eyes are sharp, so dark they're almost black, and framed by thick, expressive brows.
He is very particular with his outward appearance, though his wardrobe could best be described as eclectic. He favors jeans and tee shirts and three-piece suits equally. His collection of jewelry and shoes is the envy of all his friends, regardless of gender. His parents consider this worldliness a moral failing, one he has suffered for decades in spite of their best efforts.
Daniel was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the only son to third-generation immigrants still deeply entrenched in their Taiwanese heritage. His parents were as proud of their American-ness as they were of their origin; they raised their son in much the same way, though they granted him the dubious blessing of a more fully American name. He went to Chinese school for pre-K and elementary school at OMNI International, entering public school in Fulton County in the seventh grade. There he began to find his true calling, and explore the skin he felt most comfortable in. He was a smart child, quick-witted and clever. But he was equally skilled in Phys Ed and sports, where he made a name for himself with his extremely physical, often underhanded style of play. Daniel naturally gravitated toward "troubled" kids written off by classmates and teachers alike, those children his parents would have preferred he avoid. He formed a natural pack and put himself firmly at the fore of it.
As his father's career in the Southern Baptist church progressed from lay minister to associate pastor, Daniel found himself more and more at odds with him. Daniel shunned the nonviolence his parents preached. He disregarded the judgment they passed on others. He particularly balked at their use of "you're known by the company you keep" as a means to direct him toward "good" influences and away from those classmates Daniel felt were most in need. By the time Daniel's father completed seminary and became a full-fledged pastor at a small multilingual church, he and his father were almost constantly at war. Daniel knew the Bible backward and forward, but constantly deviated from his parents' interpretations. Their arguments grew more heated over time, made worse by Daniel's close friend and schoolmate, Faisal. Faisal's piercing intellect and probing questions backed them farther into theological corners, only solidifying Daniel's mistrust of his parents' Biblical scholarship. By his high school years, they had completely diverged.
It was in high school that Daniel earned his nickname. Over the years many classmates had mispronounced his surname, whether accidentally or otherwise, but at last his behavior began to better suit the mispronunciation. "Sin," they called him, as much for the rough crowd he ran with as for his latent aggression. He was a troublemaker, a rabble-rouser, able to justify his trigger-happy nature in nearly any situation. He broke more than one nose in his high school years, and somehow managed to avoid ever doing so in front of reliable witnesses. As a result, his cross-country and swim team careers remained on track. Between his extracurricular activities and his solid, if not especially impressive grades, even those teachers who saw the danger in him were unable to hold him back. Here, too, Faisal aided him, tutoring him in those subjects he seemed least interested in, namely science and mathematics.
Frustrated with his family, feeling stagnant at home, he applied to a number of schools as far away from his roots as he could fathom. He was accepted into the University of California at San Diego, and after flirting with a number of potential majors, at last landed on social psychology as his focus. Sin enjoyed delving into the human mind, and proved a quick study in his chosen field, blossoming from beneath Faisal's shadow. He met Aurora in his second semester, and they quickly became an inseparable pair. Her temper was as quick as his own, her passions just as deep, though she tended to focus her ire on individuals rather than whole systems. They enjoyed an intense on-again, off-again sexual partnership, each of them working through what they considered their first great love, neither of them being mature enough to properly handle such things. Between the two of them they left a trail of scorched earth across campus and the city beyond: fractured hearts, broken bones, and shattered egos littered their wake. But no matter how raucous their fights, they always found one another again, remaining on relatively good terms all the while. (Though even Sin admits she wounded him deeply when she threw his favorite suit and cufflinks into a fall bonfire on campus; they did not speak for three solid months.)
Even this rousing combination of drama and success could not hold his attention for long. By the time his senior year rolled around he found himself bored with the academic scene and its attendant social complications. Upon graduation Sin threw himself headlong into the search for a fulfilling career. He began in social services, drawn specifically to a wide range of transition services for returning soldiers, domestic violence survivors, and prisoners reentering society. It was in working with recently released prisoners that he found his calling. He found great fulfillment in serving those society had entirely discounted and cast aside, and their stories moved him deeply. More, they had dealt with trauma enough that his abrasive, overly forward personality did not cow them. He felt a kindred spirit in them, something that called to him in ways he could not explain.
From his youthful, vaguely anti-death penalty sentiments, Sin graduated to full-on prison abolitionism. With this focus ever on his mind, he became a vocal advocate for police and prison reform. He began participating in statewide and local protests, and started a small, informal series of courses on self defense and de-escalation techniques. He brought in guest speakers and specialized instructors like Max for women's self defense, hijabi self defense, and weapons training for felons unable to legally possess firearms. He learned a great deal from her, and continues to spar with her from time to time, often seeking her guidance concerning more difficult clients.
Through Sin's help, most of his clients enjoy a high degree of success as they re-enter the civilian world. They find a network of like-minded people who can support them in their search for housing, employment, and counseling. He is good at his job, in spite of the anger always boiling just below the surface. Perhaps it is that respectable success that drives him to seek greater and greater danger. He pushes himself in both his personal and professional lives. While he's tried to keep his focus on his clients, he continues to stray onto larger stages, joining protests and picking fights -- literal and figurative -- with those who would maintain the unacceptable status quo. In recent years he has begun participating in violent protests, facing down SWAT teams in full riot gear. He has been briefly detained, though not yet prosecuted for his aggression at these events. (He has endured the occasional pepper spraying, two broken fingers from a well placed baton strike, and several violently unpleasant Tasings.) His family fears for him, but they know now they cannot stop him.
SPECIAL SKILLS: His Mandarin is passable, though he's clearly no native speaker, and often mixes Taiwanese and Chinese Mandarin. It actually improves when he's intoxicated. Throws a killer left hook. He's a damn fine shot with a 4-inch barrel .357 Magnum, and is licensed for concealed carry in Georgia and South Carolina.
TRANSFORMATION: Sin and Ares understand one another on an instinctual level. As such, little changes of Ares' vessel when he manifests. Sin as Ares is slightly taller and more broad-shouldered, his lean form shaped into harder muscle; he wears a close-cropped beard, and his skin takes on a warm, burnished glow. In this form, he is capable of summoning his spear and armor, further protecting him from harm.
ABILITY/POWERS:Resilience. Sin is no stranger to combat. To casual observers he seems preternaturally adept at avoiding harm, though the truth is he can simply take more punishment than most. He can keep standing and fighting long after he should have been stopped, and seems to heal well (though no faster than any other). His opponents find this markedly unsettling, perhaps even more so than the violence he has no qualms dishing out.
FUTURE PLANS: Sin is a ready and willing foil and a source of constant strife. He will be a happy little hellraiser, and to the chagrin of many, will get along swimmingly with his deified sister Eris. I'd also love to see him take another rabble-rouser under his wing: a youthful activist with a bit of Deimos or Phobos in them, perhaps? Sin loves most what he cannot have; though there are plans in the works to cause trouble with Coyote, an Aphrodite would certainly complicate things, especially if Hephaestus wasn't too far behind.
NOTES: To paraphrase Sin himself: No, he isn't a ninja, and no, he doesn't know karate. Fuck off.
Sin's fighting style is a distinctly messy and eclectic sort. He took no formal training and learned no traditional martial arts, entirely due to the stupid, casually racist jokes and teasing he's had to endure his entire life. Instead, he sparred with friends and enemies alike throughout his school years. He enjoys UFC far more than he should. He's tried boxing, jiu jitsu, and took some extremely informal instruction in bartitsu. He's taken pieces from each, combining them with his own dirty tricks, and come up with something wholly his own.
His car is a hyperblue 2016 SubaruWRX STI with a ridiculous sound system. He loves it madly. Key it and die a slow, painful death.
